In the spring of 2005, I was inspired by the the experience of co-parenting my son Phillip, and the eloquent writings of Mark Satin.
In his book, “The Radical Middle,” Satin implores his readers, each in his/her own way, to “make a difference.” I vowed to do just that.
As a comedian [known for "kidding on the square"], I had developed a sense of sociological awareness. It had long ago occurred to me that children who benefited from enlightened childcare methodology [at a preschool level], tended to more easily adjust [both socially and academically] to Kindergarten… and that is no joke!
The actual idea for a non-profit to enrich child care providers, with the express intent of promoting “school readiness,” came to me during the 2nd [and last] annual “Stroll Around Lake Merritt, For Bliss,” in Oakland California, June, 2005.
I envisioned an organization that would provide volunteers to help take the burden off of the childcare providers in my community, by: reading books, playing music, showing attention, encouragement, and support to children [our most precious commodity].
We could strive to instill anger management, race, cultural relations, and gentrification skills. We would provide books, warm clothing, medical and nutritional information… all those things, and more.
In November 2005, I unveiled our Mission Statement at a [newly formed] Board of Directors meeting, and People Care 4 Day Care was born.
Katherine Ito attended our Board of Directors meeting in November 2005. Weeks later, she fell ill and passed away. She will never be forgotten and her spirit lives on through the work we do. RIP, Kathy.
We incorporated in April of 2006.
In September 2006 [with the help of some the following people: The entire Board of Directors, Alvin Attles, Mike Edgerley, Yolonda Schamoni, Diane Satin, Phillip Tyko, Joe Mulyava, Genevieve Cross, Daniel Wedgwood, Peter Abramov, Barbara Burton-Stewart, Nancy Nadel, Angela Milash, Douglas Read, Matt E. Wilder, Kaysey Tonk, James Abel, Nancy Ashe, Fred Karp, and Robert Whitfield], this site was launched.
In October of 2007, we became a 501(c}(3), and began making a difference in our community.
In March of 2008 we opened an office on Alameda Point.
On January 1st 2010, thanks to a joint effort by both of our Boards, PC4DC kicked off the new decade by launching a Community Forum. We plan to have it translated into as many languages as possible. Please visit, bookmark the site, and pass on news of its existence.
